The first running of the Derby was on 4th May 1780 and was named after the 12th Earl of Derby. The first race was won by a horse called Diomed and the trainer was Sir Charles Bunbury.
Since then the Derby has been run every year although the distance has changed slightly from 1 and a half miles to 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards. Many other countries have ended up creating their own version of the Derby, from the Derby Italiano to the Kentucky Derby. Bet Now
